There's been a kiwi resurgence of late. First, Flight of the Conchords came to town. If it weren't for those two boots of beers passed around at Suppenkuche beforehand mixed with the comfortable chairs at Davies Symphony Hall, we both would been awake for the whole show. Highlights whilst awake include a whale conversation on a cell phone, Christian folk song fakery and of course, the classic (mother flippin') Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenocerous.
Record shopping earlier in the week, it was like 1987 all over again. Imagine my joyful WHOOP when I spotted a new Verlaines CD on the Flying Nun label. What? Then recalled the mention of Kate Woodward's new band Minisnap and of course it was there we were at Amoeba. Who has time to download free music when there are $20 imports from NZ to purchase. Also spotted a Robert Scott CD, "Tascam Hits" home recordings, and for a second I thought I was no longer a completest, but I am quite happy with anything Bats.
As another kiwi musician asked me recently, "Are there any new bands from New Zealand that you like?" I thank the Chef for sending away for the new High Dependency Unit CD. Warning: watching might make you dizzy.
